What is Motivation?
Motivation is a reason, or the incentive, for acting or behaving in a particular way. It is a desire to do something, to achieve a goal or improve an element of your life. Motivation, or the lack of it, can mean the difference in succeeding in whatever you put your mind to, or not. There are a few tips that may influence your own levels of motivation.
Ways to Improve Your Motivation
- Set Realistic Goals
Sometimes large or longer-term goals can be overwhelming. An effective way to improve your motivation is to set yourself small and realistic goals. Once you have achieved the first goal, it will be easier to set the next. Even if each step is towards a much bigger aspiration, you will feel positive about the progress you are making. Success breeds success.
2. Give Yourself Support
Whether you’re starting a new project or trying to improve your lifestyle, it’s important to have support. This may mean going to the gym with a friend or joining a group. A friend doesn’t have to be going after the same goals as you, it will be enough that you are both encouraging each other to succeed. Joining any type of group, whether locally or on-line, will help keep you focused and motivated. It’s also a really good way to meet new friends who are great for advice and moral support.
3. Visualise Your Goal
Pin a picture that represents your end goal somewhere visible. Make sure it is somewhere that you see it several times a day. Each time you see it, you will remember what you are trying to achieve, which is a great motivator. Visualising your ambition will help make it a reality.
4. Just Make a Start
There’s never a good time to start. There will always be a reason to start tomorrow, or next week, next month. It might be raining, or too hot or maybe not enough time. Instead of thinking about how hard it will be, and how long it might take, just tell yourself to make a start. Remember, set small goals.
5. Find Inspiration.
Inspiration is one of the best motivators. Try to look for inspiration all around you such as in the people you meet, in books, music or online. Find inspiration by joining a class or get a coach. Finding a positive role model can be one of the best ways to keep you on track.
6. What Are Your Reasons?
If you have powerful reasons for wanting to achieve your goals, you are more likely to attain them. Write them down and remind yourself regularly. The motivation will be there if you really want to do something for really good reasons.
Be prepared that there will be days when you want to give up or just can’t be bothered. Be prepared for them and set yourself boundaries. This may mean that you have a rule that means that you never skip two days in a row. Nobody is perfect and there will be times when it is necessary to miss a day. But once the second day is upon you, just get started again.
8. Positive Thinking
Monitor your thought process. We talk to ourselves alot but we are not always aware of the negative thoughts creeping in. Stop them, push them out and replace them with positive thoughts. You can do this!
